Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — Dec 1974 Sessions (Tape Card File 156)

December 16, 1974 · Record Plant Sausalito

In December 1974, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tracked songs at Record Plant Sausalito over two days. The reels captured Carry Me, Time After Time, Homeward Through the Haze, and Wind on the Water. Liner notes confirm the Sausalito date for Homeward Through the Haze with Ron and Howard Albert engineering. The studio's tape card logs the sessions and the reels later shipped to Criteria in Miami. Most of these songs were re-recorded in 1975 for Crosby and Nash and Stephen Stills albums.

Tom Flye check = done, negative. IMPORTANT — CARD TAKES vs RELEASED MASTERS: The card documents Dec 1974 Sausalito TRACKING. The later released masters were largely re-recorded in 1975: Carry Me at Sound Labs LA (Mar 1975); Wind on the Water at Village Recorders LA (Jul 1 1975); Different Tongues basis at Criteria/Caribou; Time After Time released master not tied to Dec 1974. Only Homeward Through the Haze has the Dec 16 1974 Sausalito version released, on the CSN box set (1991). Do not equate the card reels with the released LP versions. SAM: no reliable released CSNY/Crosby-Nash/Stills match for a 1974 song titled 'Sam'. Could be working title, misread, or unreleased fragment. UNRESOLVED — do not publish a guess. CENSUS 2026-06-29 (MusicBrainz pass): Searched MusicBrainz for a 1974-75 CSNY-family recording titled 'Sam'. No match found. Only returns were Bing Crosby 'Sam's Song' and Neil Young 'Sam Kinison Calls' (1980s), both unrelated. Marginalia 'Guardian Angel' and 'Western Wind' returned no high-confidence CSNY-family released recordings either, so both may also be unreleased or working titles. 'Sam' remains UNRESOLVED. Remaining checks (albumlinernotes.com box-set citation, Discogs/AllMusic engineer and credit cross-check, scan/forum search for 'Sam') are blocked in the chat seat and belong in Claude in Chrome. MusicBrainz and Archive.org are the only research hosts reachable here. Project context: abandoned CSNY 'Human Highway' period.
