RELEASE HISTORY UPDATE 2026-08-15 (source: Rhino / Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary press release, supplied by Tom): The complete Wake of the Flood session tapes, over six hours, were made public for the first time on the album's 50th anniversary. That is a larger body than the 2+ hours issued on Wake of the Flood: The Angel's Share (August 18, 2023). Per the release, the full session audio was synced to the original tape box so it plays back in real time. DELUXE EDITION DETAIL: two-CD and digital via Rhino. Seven remastered album tracks, plus previously unreleased Jerry Garcia demos of "Eyes Of The World" and "Here Comes Sunshine". Bonus disc is live material from McGaw Memorial Hall, Northwestern University, November 1, 1973, the final night of the short tour that followed the album's release. GARCIA DEMOS — CAVEAT CLOSED 2026-08-15, THEY ARE NOT PLANT RECORDINGS. The Eyes of the World and Here Comes Sunshine demos were recorded in January 1973 at Garcia's own home studio, in a rear building behind the Stinson Beach house he and Mountain Girl moved into in 1971. The source is an unlabeled reel Mountain Girl found in 2016 and sent to David Gans for digitization, holding a near-complete demo session for the songs Garcia brought to the band in early 1973, including China Doll, They Love Each Other, Wave That Flag (U.S. Blues), Eyes of the World, and Here Comes Sunshine. Rhino titles three released takes "I Am The Rain (Weather Report Suite)", all dated 8/7/73. The 2026-06-19 hypothesis is now confirmed by the rightsholder, not inferred. Residual detail worth keeping: File 055 also carries an I am the Rain reel dated 8/6 (Reel 4), and no released take carries an 8/6 date. The card documents an earlier pass than anything Rhino issued. RESOLVED (new finding) — "Pistol Shot" IS China Doll. Rhino titles four released takes "Pistol Shot (China Doll)", dated 8/8/73. China Doll is a From the Mars Hotel track. Pistol Shot does not appear on File 055's eight reels, so this comes from the released audio, not from the card. MARS HOTEL COUNT REVISED UPWARD, four songs not two: U.S. Blues — File 055, Reel 6, 8/6/73 Loose Lucy — File 055, Reel 8, 8/7/73 China Doll (as Pistol Shot) — Rhino tracklist, 8/8/73 Unbroken Chain (as Phil's Song) — Rhino tracklist, 8/16/73 Mars Hotel carries eight tracks, so half the album was being worked at 2200 Bridgeway roughly ten months before the February to March 1974 CBS Burlingame sessions. Cross-referenced to. PHIL'S SONGS — advanced, not closed. Rhino issues eight takes titled "Phil's Song (Unbroken Chain)", all dated 8/16/73. File 055's Phil reel is Reel 3, dated 8/4/73, a 2-track mix or reference reel. The dates do not match. Unbroken Chain is now confirmed as a real session working title, which supports the original guess, but the card's reel sits twelve days before any released Phil take. It may be a reference copy of earlier work, or a separate and earlier Phil session that Rhino did not issue. DO NOT ASSERT that Reel 3 contains Unbroken Chain. What would settle it: locating the 8/4 material inside the six-hour stream, or a slate announcement naming the songs. NOT PRESENT IN THE RELEASED CURATION: neither U.S. Blues nor Loose Lucy appears anywhere in Rhino's 38-track Angel's Share listing. File 055 remains the only public documentation of those two takes unless they surface inside the six-hour complete-sessions stream. ROW JIMMY DATE SPREAD: the card has Row Jimmy Row on Reel 1 (8/3) and Reel 6 (8/6). Rhino's only released Row Jimmy take is dated 8/10. The card documents about a week of earlier work on the song. Rationale: File 055 and Rhino do not contradict each other, they agree where they overlap and each covers days the other does not, so primary-source precedence does not apply. Precedence settles conflicts; coverage gaps get union. The inferred overdub window is NOT included, because it rests on inference rather than a dated source. The distinctive archive claim, that File 055 documents 8/3 and 8/4 and Rhino does not publish those days, lives here in Notes and in any article, not in the display string.
