Marshall Tucker Band
May 8, 1974 · Record Plant Sausalito
Marshall Tucker's self-titled debut had gone gold on Capricorn earlier that year, built on a blend of country, jazz, and Southern rock that didn't fit any existing radio format. Tom Donahue introduced the band to a Record Plant room with maybe ten people in it on May 8, 1974. Toy Caldwell did most of the talking between songs, and "Can't You See" was already the song that defined them, his open-tuned slide guitar and Doug Gray's vocals carrying a set small enough that you can hear the room breathe. The broadcast caught the band at the peak of their debut momentum, before the arena years changed what they were.
