Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Five months after their debut album, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers played the Record Plant on April 23, 1977, with Al Kooper sitting in on keyboards. Denny Cordell, who produced their debut, introduced Kooper on the air. The ten-song set included "Listen to Her Heart" and "I Need to Know," a year before either appeared on You're Gonna Get It!, plus "Surrender," a 1976 outtake unreleased until 2018. KSAN's Los Angeles sister station KWST carried the show as a simulcast, the source of the copy that circulated for decades. UMe's Origins 1971-1978 box set, due November 6, 2026, includes the full broadcast as Live From the Record Plant 1977.
