Asleep at the Wheel
July 19, 1973 · Record Plant Sausalito
Asleep at the Wheel had formed in West Virginia in 1970 and spent two years building a following in the Bay Area before relocating to Austin in 1975, and the July 19, 1973 KSAN broadcast landed right in the middle of that California chapter. The band had just released their debut LP, Comin' Right at Ya, recorded in San Francisco earlier that year. Tom Donahue introduced the set himself. The classic lineup was in place: Ray Benson, Leroy Preston, Chris O'Connell, Lucky Oceans on pedal steel, and Floyd Domino on piano, the same group that would go on to become the longest-running western swing band in American music.
