Sessions ran from 1990 into early 1991 at The Plant in Sausalito, alongside Fantasy in Berkeley, Capitol in Hollywood, and Prince's Paisley Park in Minnesota. The Plant's own 1990 to 1991 client list names the project. Capitol released the album on October 27, 1991.
